The Openhub team visited three schools in Galați – Școala Gimnazială Nr. 24, Școala Gimnazială Nr. 26, and Școala Gimnazială Nr. 28 – to introduce third to fifth-grade students to the educational game Eco Squad (https://ecosquad.ro/).
Enthusiasm and a Willingness to Get Involved
The children were highly receptive and excited to discover this engaging game, which transforms them into real environmental heroes. Eco Squad challenges them to collect virtual trash, clean up different environments, and face “pollution bosses,” contributing to a cleaner world both in the game and in real life.
The atmosphere was full of energy and enthusiasm! Students were eager to represent their school in this competition and score as many points as possible. Teachers and school staff were also delighted with the initiative and encouraged us to expand the project to as many schools as possible.
Who’s Leading the Competition?
Since the challenge began, each school has gathered points based on students’ engagement in the game. As of now, the provisional leaderboard stands as follows:

🥈 Școala Gimnazială Nr. 26 – 39,000 points
🥉 Școala Gimnazială Nr. 28 – 26,000 points
The battle for the Eco Champion School title is in full swing, and students still have time to earn points for their schools until March 15.
What’s Next?
On March 15, we will crown the Eco Champion School, which will receive a special award offered by Grow Up Galați Coalition, Galați Community Foundation, and Openhub. However, this competition is not just about points—it’s about education, engagement, and the desire to make a real difference for the environment.
We are thrilled to have brought Eco Squad to these schools and to see so many students eager to get involved! A huge thank you to the teachers, partners, and most importantly, the students for their enthusiasm!

Galați Port – A Plastic-Free Zone
The Galați Port – Plastic-Free Zone project is implemented by the Galați Community Foundation, in partnership with Openhub and Grow Up Galați. The project is part of the “Clean Waters” program, implemented with the support of Lidl Romania, in partnership with Mai Mult Verde Association and the Association for Community Relations.
